2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Mixed Feedback

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer game identity.

The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Below is the full content from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was enlightening. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After some time of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in welcoming Ben next week. We are all eager to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.

David

Game Details and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. Then, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary reads. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and trust your team can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

The game has not yet received an confirmed launch window or consoles, but players can look forward to further news as production advances.
