EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
