Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
